Nishiki River Area
One of Japan's three most famous bridges, Kintaikyo Bridge is a wooden architectural masterpiece spanning the clear waters of Nishiki River in five striking arches. Built in 1673 by the lord of the Iwakuni Domain, Hiroyoshi Kikkawa, the structure of the arched bridge is intricate and creative; even when seen through the lens of modern bridge construction, it is said to be flawless. Together with the breathtaking natural scenery that surrounds it, Kintaikyo Bridge remains the beloved symbol of Iwakuni. Cormorant fishing boat outings are another symbol of Iwakuni and a staple of summer with approximately 380 years of history. You and your guests can enjoy an up-close and personal view of cormorants (long-necked diving birds) and their masters as they work together in exquisite harmony under the flickering firelight. Another famous landmark is Iwakuni Castle, built on a mountain top in 1608 by the first domain lord of Iwakuni, Hiroie Kikkawa, only to be torn down seven years later. The current castle tower is a reconstruction built in 1962. Inside the castle, you will find exhibits such as a model of Kintaikyo Bridge, photos, historic weapons, armor, and more.
